A Profound Experience
The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training provides leadership and direction for post-secondary education and skills training systems in British Columbia as well as labour market information and programs. In the fall of 2017, this newly formed Ministry brought together the ministries of Advanced Education and Skills and Training under one umbrella with a newly appointed Minister and Deputy Minister (DM), under the direction of a new provincial government.
With this context of immense change, the DM engaged Berlineaton to work with her and her Ministry Executive Team, comprised of 4 ADMs, to use a consultative, collaborative approach to develop a new Ministry Strategic Framework (including Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals) – aligned with the direction of the new provincial government. Once drafted, we hosted an Open Space Conference with all 300 ministry staff to socialize the plan, seek their input and feedback, and action plan next steps.
In addition to developing a new Strategic Framework for the Ministry, a key accomplishment in this project (due to the collaborative nature of the process) was a stronger, more cohesive Ministry Executive Team with a clear and shared understanding of the direction of the Ministry. This was especially important given that the Ministry had been recently formed by bringing together 2 separate Ministries with different roles they play in the education sector, and different cultures they bring to the table.
